Inactive Procedure - Pending approval from Maintenance Department Lead

The Maintenance Department at Dow Aero, LLC (“Company”) use an Industrial 6” x 48” Belt and 12” Disc machine for employees to sand items fast and efficiently.  Information for this equipment, including equipment details, locations, required personal protective equipment (PPE), standard operating procedures, energy source types, maintenance/repair procedures, training, and record keeping are identified below.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • ANSI Z87.1 safety rated safety glasses/goggles.

    • Standard eyeglasses (with or without safety shields) are not acceptable.

  • ANSI Z41.1 impact-resistant footwear.

  • N-95 dust mask.

  • Hearing protection

    • e.g. ear plugs or muffs.

Standard Operating Procedures

General

  1. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.

  2. Never operating the machine with safety guards missing.

  3. Avoid overreaching.

    • Could slip and fall into the machine.

  4. Refrain from operating machine when tired.

  5. Never leave the machine running unattended.

  6. Always shut the machine off when not in use.

  7. Verify stationary machine tools are not in wet or damp locations.

    • Keep work areas clean and well lit.

  8. Turn off power before checking, cleaning, or replacing any parts.

  9. Never brush chips away while the machine is in operation.

  10. Keep hands in sight and clear of all moving parts/cutting surfaces.

  11. Avoid overloading the machine, you may cause injury from flying parts.

    • DO NOT exceed the specific machine capacities.

  12. Avoid accidental starts by being sure that the start switch is in the “OFF” position before plugging in the machine.

  13. Secure your work.

    • USE clamps or a vise to hold your work when practical.

  14. Use the right tool.

    • DO NOT force a tool or attachment to do a job it was not designed for.

Startup

Operation

  1. Before powering the sander, make sure the surface area is free from debris.

  2. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches before turning the sander on.

  3. To start Press the GREEN button to power on the sander.

  4. Before sanding, aways allow the motor to come up to operating speed, then check the sanding disc for wobble or any unbalanced condition.

  5. Always present the workpiece to the wheel while resting the workpiece firmly on the table.

    • Failure to do so could result in damage to the workpiece or throwing of the workpiece of the wheel.

  6. Do not force or jam the workpiece into the sanding disc.

  7. To stop the sander press the RED button.

  8. Clean and remove any debris and tools after sanding.

Shutdown

  1. Press the stop RED button to power off the sander.

  2. Make sure the sander has stopped completely.

    • DO NOT USE YOUR HANDS TO SLOW IT DOWN.

Maintenance and Repair Procedures

Notification

  1. Upon the Industrial Belt and Disc Machine malfunctioning, affected employee(s) are to notify the authorized employee or superior.

    • Current authorized employee(s) for this equipment are:

      • (TBD) 

Shutdown

  1. The authorized employee(s) notify affected employee(s) of Industrial Belt and Disc Machine being removed from production.

  2. De-energize the energy type as follows:

    • Electrical

      • Unplug receptor from power source;

      • Cut power from electrical breaker supply box;

      • Lockout/tagout the electrical breaker supply box; and

      • Verified stored energy sources are present before servicing.

Diagnostics

  • Authorized employee(s), and/or approved contractor, determines the solution for corrective action.

Servicing

  • Authorized employee(s) and/or approved contractor, isresponsible for removal, repair, replacement of parts.

Startup

  1. Authorized employee(s), and/or approved contractor, confirm areas are safe and clean for re-starting production use:

    • Confirm the work is completed and the inventory of tools / equipment that were used are accounted for;

    • Remove all towels, rags, work aids, etc;

    • Make sure the shields are installed and secure; and

    • All controls should be in their safest position (i.e. no power mode).

  2. Inspect the work area to ensure that all individuals have been safely positioned or removed from the work area.

  3. Verify the authorized employee(s), and /or approved contractor, lockout/tagout is removed.

  4. Reenergize the energy types as follows:

    • Electrical

      • Confirm removal lockout/tagout on the electrical breaker supply box;

      • Restore power to the electrical supply box; and

      • Plug receptor to power source.

  5. The authorized employee(s) shall notify affected employee(s) when equipment is ready to resume production.

Recordkeeping

Regular Services

The following inspections are to occur every ### hours of use for equipment or every 180 days, which ever is lesser:

  • Adjusting the Belt Sander Table

    • Unlock the locking handle on the side of the table.

    • Using the pointer scale, set the angle to any required angle between 20 upward and 45 downward.

    • Lock the handle.

  • Adjusting the Belt Sander Arm

    • The arm which holds the sanding belt can be positioned at a full horizontal, vertical or any angle or position which is convenient to the type of sanding the employee is doing.

  • Belt Replacement
