Metalworking Band Saw

Inactive Procedure - Pending approval from Maintenance Department Lead

The Maintenance Department at Dow Aero, LLC (“Company”) use 16-inch Metalworking Band Saw for employees to cut items quickly and effectively. Information for this equipment, including equipment details, locations, required personal protective equipment (PPE), standard operating procedures, energy source types, maintenance/repair procedures, training, and recordkeeping are identified below.

Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • ANSI Z87.1 safety rated face shield or glasses/goggles depending on application;

    • Full face shield required when producing metal filings.

    • Standard eyeglasses (with or without safety shields) are not acceptable.

  • ANSI Z41.1 impact-resistant footwear; and

  • Hearing protection.

    • e.g. ear plugs or muffs.

  • Apron or properly fitted shop coat.

  • Hair ties (and further hair restraints advisable)

Standard Operating Procedures

General

  1. Avoid wearing gloves when using the machine.

  2. Do not wear loose clothing or jewelry.

  3. Use ties or other restraints as advisable for long hair and/or beards.

  4. Refrain from operating machine when tired.

  5. Confirm work area is organized and free of any obstacles.

  6. Never operate the machine with safety guards missing.

  7. Maintain a balanced stance at all times.

    • Could slip and fall into the blade or other moving parts of the machine.

  8. Never leave the machine running unattended.

  9. Confirm the switch is in the OFF position before connecting the machine to power.

    • Make all machine adjustments or maintenance with the machine unplugged from the power source.

  10. Use the right tool at the correct speed and feed rate.

  11. Keep hands out of the line of saw blade.

  12. Always use push sticks when cutting small material.

Startup

Operation

  1. Verify machine is clear and free of debris.

  2. Remove adjusting keys and wrenches from the machine before turning on

  3. Before powering the machine, select the speed you are going to need for the cut.

  4. Select the desired gearing.

    • Pull forward to shift into low speed or towards the rear to shift into high speed.

  5. Use Variable Speed Handwheel to increase or decrease speed.

    • Increase by turning clockwise; or

    • Decrease by turning counterclockwise.

  6. Use Upper Blade Guide Lock Knob to tighten or loosen the blade.

    • Tightening by turning clockwise; or

    • Loosen by turning counterclockwise.

  7. Turn on the machine’s overhead lamp before starting.

  8. To start the band saw press the GREEN button

  9. Maintain undivided attention when operational.

  10. Verify the feed chart for longitudinal or transverse cuts.

Shutdown

  1. Press the stop RED button to power off the equipment.

  2. Make sure the saw has stopped completely.

    • DO NOT USE YOUR HANDS TO SLOW IT DOWN.

  3. Clean surface and surrounding area after cutting.

  4. Turn off the machine’s overhead lamp when finished.

Maintenance and Repair Procedures

Notification

  1. Upon the Metalworking Band Saw malfunctioning, affected employee(s) are to notify the authorized employee or superior.

    • Current authorized employee(s) for this equipment are:

      • (TBD)

Shutdown

  1. The authorized employee(s) notify affected employee(s) of Metalworking Band Saw being removed from production.

  2. De-energize the energy type as follows:

    • Electrical

      • Unplug receptor from power source;

      • Cut power from the electrical breaker supply box;

      • Lockout/tagout the electrical breaker supply box; and

      • Verify stored energy sources are present before servicing.

Diagnostics

  • Authorized employee(s), and/or approved contractor, determines the solution for corrective action

Servicing

  • Authorized employee(s) and/or approved contractor, is responsible for removal, repair, replacement of parts.

Startup

  1. Authorized employee(s), and/or approved contractor, confirm areas are safe and clean for restarting production use:

    • Confirm the work is completed  and the inventory of tools/equipment that were used are accounted for.

    • Remove all towels, rags, work aids, etc.

    • Make sure the shields are installed and operational.

    • All controls should be in their safest position (i.e. no power mode).

  2. Inspect the work area to ensure that all individuals have been safely positioned or removed from the work area.

  3. Verify the authorized employee(s), and/or approved contractor, lockout/tagout is removed.

  4. Reenergize the energy type as follows:

    • Electrical

      • Remove lockout/tagout on the electrical breaker supply box;

      • Restore power to the electrical supply box; and

      • Plug receptor to power source.

  5. The authorized employee(s) shall notify affected employee(s) when equipment is ready to resume production.

Recordkeeping

Daily Maintenance

  • Upper Blade Guide Shaft

    • Clean after each day’s use.

Weekly Maintenance

  • Upper Blade Guide Shaft

    • Lightly grease weekly.

Monthly Maintenance

  • Blade Tension Screw

    • Grease monthly.

  • Speed Change Handle

    • Grease monthly with a light oil on teeth and threads.

Annual Maintenance

  • Gearbox Oil

    • Drain and refill the gearbox annually, or every 3000 hours of operation.

      • Use Servo SAE HP140 gear oil or equivalent. 

Regular Services

The following inspections are to occur every ### hours of use for this equipment or every 180 days, which ever is lesser:

  • Blade Tensioning

    • Use blade tension indicator as reference only. 

      • Blade should be tensioned using the finger pressure method.

  • Blade Tracking

    • Blade tracking may be required periodically depending upon blade size and tension.

  • Blade Guide Adjustment

    • Blade guide adjustment has been set by the manufacturer. 

      • Should future adjustment be needed, follow owner’s manual service book instructions. 

  • Top Guide Adjustment

    • Always position top guide to within 1/8” of the top surface of workpiece.

  • Changing Saw Blades

    • Follow instructions in the owner’s manual. —MORE INFORMATION NEEDED—

  • Work Lamp Bulb

    • The work lamp uses a standard medium-base 60 watt bulb.

  • Variable Pulley

    • Use a light weight grease into grease fitting located on end of pulley shaft.

The following service logs are to be maintained for two (2) years on this equipment:

  • Daily, weekly, monthly, and annual inspection.

  • Lubrication services.

  • Regular services.
